There are only a handful of Tonga beach resorts but these offer the best value of all the South Pacific destinations and rank amongst the most tranquil beach settings in the world. Tourism in Tonga is very low key and you'll notice this from the genuine hospitality and enquiry about yourself from the locals. The main island of Tongatapu is a large uplifted coral island with a few picturesque beaches. However, there are no beach resorts other than a couple of backpacker places on the west coast aimed mostly at surfers. The best beaches are found on the small islands within Togatpau Lagoon which take just 20 to 50 minutes to reach by boat from Nukualofa Town. These islands boast gorgeous sandy beaches with great swimming and snorkelling in the lagoon. Guests staying on these islands can enjoy shopping and sightseeing on the main island as its so close. For beachcombing, and to experience the traditional Tongan way of life, head to the Haapai Group. This group of 30 islands has lots of quaint fishing villages and miles of secluded beaches. Unfortunately there are only a couple of places to stay, most of which are budget style guesthouses. Slightly further north, or a 50 minute flight from Tongatapu, is the stunning Vavau Group with its myriad of small islands, deep passages, secluded bays and inter winding channels. Vavau is renowned as the best sailing destination in the South Pacific as well as being the best place in the South Pacific to view humpback whales - both have limited seasons between May and October.
